Fresh
Avocado
At Burger Wisconsin we only use fresh Avocados,
no imported processed Avocado pulp for us.
We buy fresh Avocados, watch them ripen to perfection, and then
we gently mash them to give you nothing but fresh Avocado
taste.
We use NZ Hass
Avocados most of the time. When Haas are out of season, the
winter months May to July, we use Reed
Avocados. Hass & Reed are the main Avocado crops grown in
NZ.
The Avocado is a native of Central America and has been grown
commercially in NZ since the 1970's. Most are grown around the Bay
of Plenty.
As with all fresh fruit (yes, Avocado is a fruit) they are very
healthy. Studies have shown that Avocados will reduce LDL (bad
cholesterol) and increase HDL (good cholesterol). They are high in
potassium and the vitamins B, E & K. Avocados have the highest
fibre of any fruit.
Our most popular burgers contain Avocado, the CAB - Chicken
Avocado & Bacon and the BAB - Beef …….. Avocado is also our
most popular extra when customers 'Build Their Own Burger'.
Avocados only ripen once they are picked from the tree. The best
way to purchase Avocados is to purchase them an olive green colour,
then watch them ripen to be used once perfectly ripe. Do not store
in the refrigerator, leave them at room temperature. Once the skin
has turned a brown-green colour they are 'firm ripe' ready for
eating. Once dark brown they are 'soft ripe' for spreading and
dips.
If you wish to hurry up their ripening, place the Avocado in a
paper-bag with a banana or apple. Ethylene gas given off by the
apple & banana will quickly ripen the Avocado.
Once cut open Avocado tends to brown quite quickly. You can
inhibit browning by leaving the stone in the un-eaten Avocado half
or in your bowl of dip. If storing Avocado dip store in a container
and cover with gladwrap pressed close to the Avocado to leave as
little air space as possible. A little lemon juice will also
inhibit browning.
Be careful removing Avocado seed / stone. Hospitals treat many
people who hold the Avocado and stab at the stone with a
knifepoint, missing the stone and stabbing their hand - ouch!
Avocados are best opened by, slicing around the fruit to the
seed twisting each half to separate. Scoop out the seed using a
spoon. Remove the flesh by sliding a spoon between the skin and the
fruit, you will be able to remove a whole half this way.
